Dame Durden lives in the past, and she intends her daughter to follow in her footsteps. So Edith is pushed into an engagement with the Saxon-blooded minister, Dr. Thorne, who may not be all he appears. The wild and newly elevated duke, Helver Saymore, is Edith’s own choice, but there are powerful arguments against him—including his own lack of coming to the point. Regency Romance by Joan Smith; originally published by Fawcett

“A Regency romance that goes down like a glass of lemonade, slightly tart, not overly sweet.” – Publishers Weekly

Dame Durden Daughter edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks

Another one of Joan Smith's books that I had never read. The first couple of pages describe the hero in the following manner:

...was the hero of a thousand scandals... had broken a score of bones while still in breeches riding the wildest nags in the county... had driven two tutors to drink with his escapades, and one to the local roundhouse for aiding him in kidnapping a local beauty... it was assumed as a matter of course that the child of every unwed mother in Saymore's domain was to be laid at his door... that the staggering sums paid out by his papa went to the moneylenders or to the muslin company...

So... needless to say, the hero in this book, Helver, the Duke of Saymore, is beyond a rake and the fact the countryside is littered with his bastards certainly puts one off when considering reading the book. However, if you can get past the first page, a somewhat different impression might be given the reader when we are introduced to the person in question. Not saying he might not have been guilty of the description, but if so, that's certainly not the behavior he exhibits during the rest of the book.

Where does Dame Durden's daughter come into play? Well, the daughter of the dame is a young woman named Edith whose mother lives and breathes the past - specifically the Tudor period. Dame Durden lives in the distant past and commands Edith to dwell there with her. When Edith runs into her old childhood friend, Helver - who has been abroad on the Continent and returned because his father has passed - she finally begins to have something to look forward to, especially when she and Helver occasionally meet secretly.

I found Helver to be an interesting hero type. Yes, he does try to get the most interesting woman in the neighborhood to become his paramour - a widowed countess who is strictly after marriage. But, since that doesn't work out for him, he eventually begins to understand what is truly important in life. By this time, Edith is, unfortunately, engaged to a man of the cloth - a real jerk. But, by then we know Helver enough to figure out he will overcome all obstacles to have Edith as his own.

Dame Durden Daughter edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks Reviews

Though not quite a Georgette Heyer, it nevertheless delivers more than the regular run-of-the-mill Regencies around. I think it's because most of her secondary characters are reasonably well conceived and written. I have also read another novel by the author, Imprudent Lady. I found Dame Durden's Daughter more interesting (had better-written interplay between various characters).
not really interesting. unusual story line. Needs more detail on the life and subplots. Facts are thrown and reader is asked to follow.
I have enjoyed other books by Joan Smith and was liking this one as well until the end. In fact something bothered me so much, I actually signed up just to write this review.
I'm not sure you could call it a spoiler, but at the climax the hero SLAPS the heroine! And then SHE apologizes! He immediately apologizes to her as well, but it took the fun right out of everything and ruined my enjoyment of the ending. I feel that the context did not justify the action in anyway (not that violence is ever really justifiable).
I wish I had not bought this as an ebook so I could return it. As it is, I have no plans to read it again and may simply delete it.
Very disappointing. But I still recommend other regencies by Smith (Winter Wedding is my favorite - get that one instead!)
good.
One of my favourites by this author the other is Perdita.
This is an amusing and rather touching story, with some unusual plot twists. I liked it so much I have read it twice.
I did not notice any of the glaring anachronisms that so often appear in other "regencies".
These regency romances offer a discussion of what a good woman is. A woman whose mother is obsessed with family pride finds that her childhood friend is very interesting now that he has grown up.
I love Joan Smith but this is not one of my favorites. Not a keeper.
